Our government is systematically erasing trans people.
In fourteen months, the federal government — joined by dozens of states — has moved against transgender Americans in ways that follow a precise and recognizable pattern.
Here is what has happened:
Scholars who study mass atrocities recognize this pattern, and it has a name.
In 1987, genocide researcher Dr. Gregory Stanton identified the stages that — across the Holocaust, Rwanda, Cambodia, and elsewhere — transform a minority from "different" into "dangerous" into absent. He called them the Ten Stages of Genocide.
Erasure can happen through forced assimilation, destruction of identity, and removal of the conditions for survival. Trans people are being legally, medically, historically, and statistically eliminated from public life.
